Difference Between DomainKey And DKIM

DomainKeys Identified Mail (DKIM) is the successor of Yahoo DomainKeys. Both DomainKey and DKIM have similarities, however, DKIM has an additional aspect of Cisco’s Identified Internet Mail standard (IIM). The enhancement of this standard gives more flexibility and security than DomainKeys alone. Below is the list of main differences between DKIM and DomainKeys:

Key differences include:
  1. DKIM supports stronger and multiple cryptographic algorithms (such as RSA-SHA256), while DomainKeys supported only a single, weaker algorithm.

  2. DKIM provides more granular control over signing and validating both email headers and the message body.

  3. DKIM offers improved and standardized support for third-party email signing.

  4. DKIM cryptographically protects its own signature header, helping detect unauthorized modifications.

  5. DKIM introduces structured selectors and tagging mechanisms for better key management.

  6. DKIM supports signature timestamps and expiration, limiting the validity period of a signature.
